Moving Made Easy

As a relocation specialist, I have handled a variety of moves for my clients—state to state, local and temporary moves. If you are unable to hire out the job, here are five tips for making your move easy.

1. Download a moving checklist
Do not be afraid to cross out what does not apply to your needs and add additional items that may be unique to your situation. Here is one offered at Real Simple.

2. Stock up on supplies
If you are handling your own move, be sure to have the following basics on hand.
  • Boxes in  a variety of sizes
  • Packing tape
  • Sharpies
  • Labels
  • Scissors
  • Box cutters
  • Dolly
  • Gloves
  • Rope, twine, tie-downs and bungee cords
  • Felt floor pads
  • Packing paper
  • Moving blankets
  • Garbage bags

3. Schedule a pick up with your local charity
Designate one room in your house as the "donate" room. As you pack, add items to this location and schedule pick up for three days prior to move. If you have access to your home after the move, schedule the pick up for the day after the move because inevitably you will have items to add on moving day.

4. Hire a sitter
Whether for your human babies or fur babies, scheduling a sitter the day before and day of the move will decrease your stress tremendously.

5. Be prepared
On the day of the move, you should not be packing anything. Be courteous to your movers. There are few things more frustrating than to be moving an unprepared person. All your items should be boxed, labeled and ready to go.

Before anyone arrives, go room by room and double check that you are ready. This includes emptying all cabinet and furniture drawers.

Remember, think through the process. Have a plan. If you do, I dare say you may enjoy your moving day more than expected.
